From Intern to University Relations Manager: Building my Hilti Career

By Taylor, University Relations Manager

As a former intern who joined Hilti full-time after graduation, I’m sharing my perspective on the internship program, my transition into a full-time position, and my career progression so far.

Tell us about your internship experience.

During my internship, I was the media communications intern for our branding team. My projects were centered around our social media accounts before we had a dedicated person to work on our social media strategies. I spent my summer creating a strategy around how to best engage our customers using social media platforms, and once I went back to school, I saw my strategy implemented by the team. It was great to see the work I had spent all summer on implemented! I loved that along with the project I was assigned, I had the opportunity to create a few development goals of my own that I wanted to achieve during the summer: network with tenured Hilti employees that had international experience and write articles for our internal employee platform. Even as an intern Hilti was dedicated to my development and helping me gain the skills I needed and wanted to improve on.

How have you developed within your career so far?

If you are looking for a company where there’s a lot of opportunity for internal growth and development, Hilti is the place. In every role I've had at Hilti, I have had amazing managers who have taken the time to understand where I want to develop and helped me map out my plan to get there. I've had the opportunity to work in sales, marketing, and human resources, and Hilti has provided me the resources to develop and work in each of these departments. Our learning and development team does everything from product training to leadership training, and all employees have the ability to take advantage of these trainings to help advance their careers. I also utilized Hilti’s educational assistance program, earning my MBA from Oklahoma State while working full-time. I’m looking forward to using the educational assistance program again in the future to further my HR education.

What is your favorite part of your role?

Throughout my time at Hilti I have always loved sharing my intern experience with others, even referring my sister for a role and helping mentor other interns during my tenure at Hilti. I am now responsible for hiring all of our corporate interns and co-managing our internship program, and I love getting the opportunity to help other college students find their home at Hilti and show them the reasons I love working here!

What’s a favorite or impactful moment from your time at Hilti so far?

I had been with Hilti about six months in my full-time role on the Inside Sales team and my manager gave me the opportunity to attend Hilti’s annual kick-off meeting to help support the marketing team I had interned on. I was able to learn about the new products and services we were releasing as well as attend our yearly service awards. Team members are recognized at this event for tenure with Hilti, and seeing how many people received awards was really inspiring, especially to someone so new to the company. It was amazing to hear their stories of why they chose to build their careers at Hilti, and I’m looking forward to the day I get to attend the event as an award recipient.

One of my favorite moments during my time at Hilti was when my sister signed her offer to join us full-time after graduation. My grandpa worked at Hilti for 45 years, and he is so proud to have two of his granddaughters working for Hilti!

What 3 words would you use to describe Hilti to someone?

Family. Development. Supportive.

What’s a myth about your job that you’d like to bust? Or about working at Hilti?

You don’t have to have any form of construction background to intern or work for Hilti! I did not have any previous experience, which can be intimidating, but at Hilti we really do hire team members that fit our fantastic culture. The construction industry is constantly changing, and it’s really exciting to know that you play a part in building the communities that we live in.

Any tips for someone who is considering a role at Hilti or advice for someone interested in a career like yours?

Take full advantage of your internship experience! Meet with as many team members as possible, figure out your career path possibilities and opportunities available to you after graduation. The goal of the internship is to for you to fully understand what a full-time career at Hilti looks like, so don’t be afraid to network and ask questions to figure out if Hilti is the right home for you.
