From Intern to Supply Manager: Building my Hilti Career

By Kennedy, Supply Manager

As a former intern who joined Hilti full-time after graduation, I’m sharing my perspective on the internship program, my transition into a full-time position, and my career progression so far.

Tell us about your internship experience.

My internship was a great experience to dive into the corporate world, learn about Hilti finance and become close with other interns. My intern manager was the Director of Finance Operations and she supported me shadowing others to understand all parts of the business. In shadowing, I found my interest in the indirect procurement team – the team I eventually started full-time with!

My intern manager is still one of the most important mentors in my professional career.

How have you developed within your career so far?

I am just approaching two years of full-time work post-college graduation and it's crazy to think in that time I have already had two different positions! I've learned so much in this short period of time and accomplished great things with my team. I have a great mentor who continually trains, develops and pushes me to continue to grow both within my role and outside of it. I'm always trying to develop whether that’s learning new areas of the business, improving my procurement expertise or getting involved with projects.

My biggest advice is to get involved in projects or take on tasks even if they don’t fit your job description – there is always room to grow and learn from those around you!

What is your favorite part of your role?

My favorite part of my role currently is getting to interact with not only our vendors, but also internal business units. I get to work with individuals across all departments in North America. It helps me learn more about our company and business model from different perspectives. I also love that procurement is a global organization, so I get to be involved in projects globally to help shape our strategy and procedures.

What are your aspirations in your career?

My goal for my career is to continue to develop within my current department and finance overall at Hilti. I am very passionate about our finance teams – the teams are high performing and talented individuals that keep Hilti running from a financial perspective.

A few of my more specific goals are to manage a team and become a Finance Business Partner.

What 3 words would you use to describe Hilti to someone?  Family, Challenging, Innovative.

Anything else you’d like to share?

My sister works at Hilti too! We often get emails that were meant for the other person. Although we don’t work directly together, we get to interact with different projects or events since she is the university recruiting manager for finance interns and entry-level positions. Our grandpa worked at Hilti for 45 years – Hilti Red is his favorite color.
