What's the role?

The Design & Development Engineer IV (Firestop) is responsible for development and research activities to derive product solution from concept to serial production within the product development and supply team. This role requires creativity in design, proven understanding in relevant materials, and manufacturing technologies in conjunction with design to cost, based on the competency of Hilti suppliers. This role will interact within an interdisciplinary team (product management, supply manager, quality) to ensure development quality. The Design & Development Engineer IV (Firestop) understands how to complete deliverables on time with a high degree of self-reliance.

What does the role involve?

• Develop mechanical product solutions based on market requirements, using NX CAD software and PDM software ECTR; perform analysis via hand calculations and/or finite element analysis
• Systematically develop new concepts based on customer needs and cost targets
• Work closely with suppliers to develop serial drawings, taking into consideration manufacturing requirements
• Validate concepts in terms of function, cost, manufacturing technology, and quality in cooperation with Testing, Marketing, Quality, and Supply
• Responsible for detailed design specification/engineering, manufacturing of components and assembly in conformity to standards and processes - design to the state of the art
• Test developed solutions, including defining test setup and test execution
• Coach and mentor junior development engineers, providing guidance on assignments
• Assign and define work to interns and/or external contractors
• Collaborate and coordinate with internal and external partners
• Document developed product, including development and design report
• Additional duties as assigned

What you need is:

• Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering or design engineering, required; Master of Science, preferred
• Minimum six (6) years of product development experience, required
• Demonstrated knowledge of drawing features (dimensions, tolerances, design know-how) so that full specification can be made that is understood by internal and external stakeholders
• Demonstrate knowledge of types of steel materials used for producing typical Firestop products (Cast in, collars, pass through devices)
• Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing technologies such as stamping/bending, welding, roll forming
used for producing typical Firestop products
• Familiarity with development tools such as Design of Experiments (DoE), Morphological Box and Failure
Mode Effects and Analysis (FMEA)
• Proficiency in UG NX 10 and ECTR, required
• Basic understanding of design to cost methodology
• Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing technologies such as stamping/bending, welding, roll forming used for producing typical Firestop products
•Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing technologies such as stamping/bending, welding, injection molding used for producing typical Firestop products
• Grasp of design variables that can be manipulated to get different levels of performance and/or cost
• Basic knowledge of finite element analysis
• Demonstrated situational leadership skills
• Ability to work in interdisciplinary and intercultural project teams
• High commitment, self-responsibility and customer orientation
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Working Conditions:
Work is typically performed in a test lab environment working with heavy machinery and hazardous materials; occasional visits to job sites, required.
Up to 10% domestic and international travel, required.

Adverse Working Conditions:
• Job requires walking on construction sites and uneven surfaces, ladders & stairs during all seasons of the year
• Depending on geography employees may be exposed to adverse heat or cold exposure
• Construction jobsites may also expose employee to excessively loud noises
• Test lab environment working with heavy machinery and exposure to hazardous materials

Safety Equipment Required:
• Hardhat, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, steel toe boots and long pants required for working jobsites
• Must observe and abide by all safety regulations as required by Hilti, Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA), and General Contractors
• Ear protection is strongly encouraged and may be required on some jobsites
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to walk on construction projects and able to lift and carry as much as 65 pounds
